I exactly know what I want in my life!!! I don’t know how many of us, and if any; how often we have made this statement with a lot of conviction. They say Life is a Journey. Nobody knows how long, how difficult, how many uneven and smooth rides and how many dangerous curves. It’s a never ending road which certainly has a destination. But do we know how close or how far have we reached?
We all carry a roadmap to our journey….self designed, well analyzed and tactfully planned. We plan for the desert stretch and the mountain trench. We prepare ourselves to swim through the ocean and fly in the open sky. Our vision is clear to reach the destination and complete this journey. Sounds so simple, isn’t it?? But how easy it is to achieve and traverse through the path?
As a kid, all of us thought that we would want to grow up as strong individuals who take responsibility for our own actions. Make our choices and move ahead in the right direction. The ‘so-called-navigator’ which gave us the directions had been our favourite gadget. Time and again we reminded ourselves not to fall flat on our face and make the right decision and strike the correct note. Everything looks picture perfect and our desires make us do what we wish to do. I remember this line of Gautam Buddha – Desire is the root cause of all suffering. I must have read it at a very young age and slowly embodied this thought to my beliefs. The urge to reach a destination ‘successfully’ is also a desire. The willingness to complete your journey overcoming all hurdles is also a desire. And above all, the thought of being well-planned to achieve this goal is also a desire.
The love of ‘self’ is an extremely biased feeling. You feel selfish but yet you want to live that emotion. In the midst of this, we often come face-to-face with the truth called pain. It hurts, makes you numb, and kills you slowly. But makes you live life the way it should be. This search of the destination that we began with or without a roadmap comes to a stand still when we face situations. May be we planned for a warm clothing to cross the ice-tip. But you suddenly find a desert. What happens now? Change in plan – not possible. Blaming the roadmap – wouldn’t help. Cursing your luck – is there much you could do? So the only breather you have is – Adapt to the change!!!
Change is the most inevitable fact of Life. We all accept it and try to move ahead. But does our acceptance means that we make ourselves vulnerable? People tackle this through various modes – close their eyes and move ahead, accept the change – with a feeling that ‘there is no option’ left out, fight the change etc. There is no pre-defined right way to handle this. It’s like the fact of pre-planned roadmap and journey of life. They don’t go hand-in-hand and so does change and its defence mechanism.
Our journeys are tough. The destination that we desire to reach may or may not be our final goal. Life takes us through a roller coaster ride wherein we get butterflies in our stomach and also feel nauseatic. The aim to be happy comes with a heavy price, sometimes unseen and definitely uncalled. But what saves us from the agony is being optimistic and facing the hurdles. Our desires might bring us suffering, but as humans; if this is a vice to have; we all should have atleast one. Reminds me of 2 things – one a hindi proverb and the other an old time song…..
Proverb says – “Girte hai sher sawar hi maidan-e-jung mein, who kya khaak girenge jo ghutno ke bal chalte hai?”
And the song goes as – “Zindagi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar…koi samjha nahi, koi jaana nahi”
